Drawn to Life by Matt Deakin

Hello and welcome to Matt's world. The world of Cornish artist, Matt Deakin, who specialises in Photorealism with graphite and coloured pencils.

Matt Deakin is a self-taught pencil artist with over 40+ years of drawing experience.

Matt discovered a love for drawing from a very young age and years of dedication have allowed him to hone and develop his skills to produce drawings with such realism that they are often mistaken for photographs.

Drawing in black and white with pencils is Matt's first love but not the limit to his skills as he often draws photorealistic drawings with coloured pencils too.

The tiny details that are present in Matt's drawings but not always visible in a photograph are what really brings Matt's drawings to life alongside depth of contrast, tones and hues.

In every drawing that Matt draws he gradually builds up the layers over the course of up to and around 100 hours and sometimes more for some drawings. Matt is meticulous and precise with every pencil stroke and his end goal for every drawing is to produce a drawing that looks like a photo and can often see a viewer in disbelief that it isn't an actual photo.

To be able to create drawings of such precise detail with a few simple pencils in order to bring a drawing to life is an absolute joy no matter how long it may take and seeing the look of happiness on the face of a customer when he presents them with their drawing is a beautiful feeling and to know that he has brought joy to them fills Matt with pride.

Matt doesn't just undertake Commissions but also produces original pieces of artwork and has a selection of original works and also prints of some of his drawings available to purchase if you want to check out the "Original Work" and "Prints" section of this website. All of his drawings can be viewed in the "Gallery" menu.

Matt's drawings have won several online competitions including the Derwent Online competition with the theme of "Surreal" for an original drawing called "Glass of Water...is it?". The winning drawing is available as Limited Edition prints and can be seen in the picture on this page.
